Art and Photography
Julie Wosk is professor emerita of studio painting, art history, and English at the State University of New York, Maritime College in New York City. She is a photographer, author, and mixed-media painter whose work often features images of simulated women. Her work has been exhibited in American museums and galleries, and was included in the exhibit she curated “Alluring Androids and Robots” at the New York Hall of Science and the Cooper-Union Gallery in Manhattan, and her exhibit “Imaging Women in the Space Age” at the New York Hall of Science 2019-2020.. Her lecture on “Alluring Androids and Robots in Film, Photography, and Art” was taped by PBS Channel Thirteen Television in New York as part of their “Best Lectures in New York” series.
Dr, Wosk has also published widely on art, technology, film, and literature. She is the author of several books including My Fair Ladies: Female Robots, Androids, and Other Artificial Eves (Rutgers University Press, 2015).
Her book Playboy, Mad Men, and Me--And Other Stories (2020) describes her experiences at Playboy, her work as a civil rights worker for Dr. Martin Luther King's organization in Alabama in the year of Selma, and other stories first published in The New York Times and more.
She is also the author of Women and the Machine: Representations From the Spinning Wheel to the Electronic Age (Johns Hopkins University Press) and Breaking Frame: Technology and the Visual Arts in the Nineteenth Century (Rutgers University Press).
She has presented guest lectures throughout the country, including at Princeton University, Columbia University, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design, and the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. Recently she has given several interviews about My Fair Ladies on NPR and European radio. She is the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Scholarship and Creative Activities.
